Description: Cancer Basics is an introductory course and provides a concentrated, self-paced learning experience on the fundamentals of cancer biology, cancer treatment, management of cancer-related symptoms, and patient and family care. Cancer Basics is an online, on-demand course.
This course is for Clinical Center Nursing Department employees only.
Contact Hours: 6 contact hours will be awarded within the ONS Online Course platform, if all course requirements are met.
Special Comments: This course is offered on-demand. It is not date specific. This will be completed as self-study. Registration is a two-part process. First, you register with the CCND via ClassTrack Course Registration system and then you will receive an email from the course coordinator in your work email account. You will receive instructions on how to enroll in the ONS course using a "code". This course is offered at no cost to you. You will be able to access this course from any computer by logging into your personal ONS account. You will enjoy access to the course material for 180 days. You can register at any time. Your user account activation instructions will be emailed to you at the beginning of the month you have registered.
Target Audience: This course is for nurses caring for oncology patients in oncology as well as non-oncology areas in inpatient and ambulatory care settings. This course is appropriate for new graduates and nurses transitioning to a new role in oncology. Ideally, participants complete this course within their first 6 months of practice at NIH. In order to enroll in this course, you must be an employee of the Clinical Center Nursing Department
Course Objectives: Following completion of the Oncology Education Series – Cancer Basics (online ONS Cancer Basics course), the participant will be able to:
•Describe how mutations lead to the formation of cancer.
•State the seven warning signs of cancer.
•Distinguish primary prevention from secondary prevention.
•Distinguish cure, control, and palliation as treatment goals.
•Describe three potential side effects related to external beam radiotherapy.
•Compare the mechanisms of action of chemotherapy and anti-angiogenesis therapy.
•Distinguish elements in a collaborative management plan for pain control.
•Describe nutritional modifications to minimize diarrhea and anorexia/cachexia.
•State interventions to minimize fatigue in a patient with cancer.
•Describe cancer as a chronic disease.
•Identify national goals to treat cancer as a chronic disease.
•State major challenges to effective coping for patients with cancer and their families
Pre-requisites: None.
This is a prerequisite course for nurses new to the Chemotherapy and Biotherapy administration competency, who are planning to take the “ONS/ONCC Online Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy with Nursing Department Bridge to Practice” course.
