Description: This two-day course provides the mental health nurse and technician with an introduction to the Crisis Prevention Institute Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Foundation Training Program. The first training day participants will discuss and practice crisis prevention using the CPI Crisis Development Model with a focus on early verbal nonphysical methods and personal safety techniques. On day two participants will discuss and practice how and when to use a team to provide physical intervention for an out of control and dangerous individual.
Contact Hours: 12 Contact hours will be awarded to participants who attend the entire event, achieve 80% or higher on the post-test, participate in all practice activities and complete and submit the course evaluation. CPI is an approved provider of continuing education for the California board of Registered Nursing (This approval currently applies to nurses in the following states: AL, AK, AR, DC, DE, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, KY, LA, MA, MI, MN, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WY. Check with your licensing board for training requirements if you do not see your state listed above, as it may still apply). This activity has no commercial support of sponsorship. Planner, presenters, and content reviewers disclose no conflict of interest relative to this educational activity.
Special Comments: This class is currently being offered in an in-person format, follow up in person practice sessions for disengagement and holding skills are required upon completion of the course.
Target Audience: Initial class required for all CCND mental health nurses, technicians, and members of the CC Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT). Open to interdisciplinary colleagues.
Course Objectives: Course Objectives: 1. Identify behavior that indicates an escalation toward aggressive and violent behavior and take appropriate measures to avoid, decelerate, and/or de-escalate crisis situations. 2. Assess the level of risk associated with crisis behavior and make appropriate decisions related to the management of such risks.3. Use suitable and acceptable physical interventions to reduce or manage risk behavior. 4. Identify the impact of crisis events and describe Postvention responses that can be used for personal and organizational support and learning.
