Description: The purpose of this course is to provide fundamentals in oncologic emergencies including coagulopathies, myelosuppression, as well as metabolic, structural, and neurologic emergencies.

This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Maryland Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Contact hours will be awarded to Registered Nurses who attend the entire course and complete an evaluation as well as achieve a score of 75% or greater on the post-knowledge assessment.
Special Comments: This course meets for one 8.5 hour session. Participants will receive detailed instructions by email.
Target Audience: This course is for nurses caring for oncology patients in oncology as well as non-oncology areas in inpatient and ambulatory care settings. This course is appropriate for new graduates and nurses transitioning to a new role in oncology. Ideally, participants complete this course within their first 6 months of practice at NIH. Experienced nurses seeking a refresher are welcome to attend.
Course Objectives: Following attendance of the Oncology Education Series – Oncologic Emergencies, the participant will be able to:
1. Discuss common oncologic emergencies.
2. Describe interventions and treatment for common oncologic emergencies.
3. Identify infection control concerns for the oncology patient.
Pre-requisites: None.
This is a prerequisite course for nurses new to the Chemo Biotherapy administration competency, who are planning to take the “ONS/ONCC Online Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy with Clinical Center Nursing Department Bridge-to- Practice” course.
This course is a prerequisite for the Oncology Education Series: Concepts, Trends, and Care course.
