Description

The purpose of this course is to provide the learner with an understanding of Ommaya Reservoirs and their use in the treatment of leptomeningeal diseases. Additionally, nurses will benefit from detailed information regarding CNS anatomy, CSF lab interpretation, and neuro assessment in this patient population. This didactic information will provide the participant with the information necessary to pursue competence in Ommaya Reservoir Access. This course includes a test and simulation. An 84% or higher must be achieved on the test before competency validation can be pursued. Competency validation will take place at the unit level after successful completion of the course.

Special Comments

This course meets for one 8 hour day and an additional 2 hour session for testing and simulation. Participants must register for the 8 hour course day and a 2 hour simulation session.

Target Audience

This course is for nurses who want to achieve competence in caring for patients with an Ommaya Reservoir. This course is appropriate for CCND RNs who have at least 6 months of experience working in the Clinical Center with Research Participants and Protocols. Participants must hold current "Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs" and "Chemotherapy/Biotherapy" competencies.

Course Objectives

After completion of the course, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the function and formation of CSF. 2. Perform a neurological assessment of a patient with an Ommaya. 3. Identify potential complications associated with Ommaya Reservoirs and strategies to mitigate risk.

Pre-requisites

Clinical Center Nursing Department (CCND)RNs who: 1. Have the goal of obtaining the CCND "Ommaya Reservoir Access" Competency. 2. Have practiced in the Clinical Center for at least 6 months. 3. Hold a current CCND "Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs" Competency. 4. Hold a current CCND "Chemotherapy Biotherapy" Competency. 5. Obtain Nurse Manager approval.
