Description
This one-day educational program is designed for nurses working as Clinical Research Nurses and Research Nurse Coordinators at the NIH Clinical Center. The program will serve as an introduction to genetics and genomics, providing the foundation on key concepts and basic science essential to understanding the use of genetics and genomics in health care today.

Target Audience
The course is recommended for all nurses interested in learning more about genetics and genomics in nursing.
Course Objectives
1. Explain the difference between the terms genetics and genomics. 2. Define inheritance patterns. 3. Describe the relationship between genes and proteins. 4. Identify chromosomal abnormalities and DNA mutations. 5. Participate in drawing a family pedigree. 6. Identify reasons why someone would have genetic testing performed. 7. State two reasons why it is important for the nurse to understand the influence of genetics and genomics on patients' responses to treatment.
