Description

The purpose of this course is to provide the learner with an understanding of how cellular therapy is used to treat cancer and other diseases, including procedures and practices for cell mobilization, harvest, expansion, and infusion. Additionally, nurses will benefit from detailed knowledge regarding how cellular therapy influences the immune system and the very specific immune related side effects seen with this treatment modality.

Special Comments

This course meets for one 8-hour ONLINE Session with a mix of self-study and synchronous ZOOM lectures. Plan to telework for a day of education on the specified date.

Target Audience

This course is for nurses caring for oncology patients in oncology as well as non-oncology areas in inpatient and ambulatory care settings. This course is appropriate for new graduates, nurses new to oncology, as well as experienced oncology nurses. Participants need to have at least 6 months of experience working in the Clinical Center with Research Participants and Protocols.

Course Objectives

Following attendance of the Cellular Therapy Course, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify at least three indications for cellular therapy. 2. Describe procedures for cell harvesting, processing, and infusion. 3. Identify three side effects of cell therapy, including nursing assessment and management strategies.

Pre-requisites

All participants should have previous or concurrent enrollment in the CCND Online Basic Immunology Course. Additionally, it is recommended nurses working on 1NW, 3NE, and 3SEDH will have previous or concurrent enrollment in the ONS Online Blood and Marrow Transplant Course.
