Description

This two day course provides the behavioral health nurse with an introduction to the Crisis Prevention Institute Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Training Program. The first training day participants will discuss and practice crisis prevention using the CPI Crisis Development Model with a focus on early verbal nonphysical methods and personal safety techniques. On day two participants will discuss and practice how and when to use a team to provide physical intervention for an out of control and dangerous individual.

Contact hours will be awarded to participants who attend the entire event, achieve 80% or higher on the post test, participate in all practice activities and complete and submit the course evaluation. CPI is an approved provider of continuing education for the California Board of Registered Nursing. (This approval currently applies to nurses in the following states: AL, AK, AR, DC, DE, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, KY, LA, MA, MI, MN, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WY. Clinical Center behavioral health nurses, behavioral health technicians and interdisciplinary colleagues.

Course Objectives

Abbreviated Course Objectives: 1. Discuss the four levels of crisis development as defined by CPI 2. Discuss key concepts related to verbal intervention 3. Discuss how to verbally intervene with a patient in a developing crisis 4. Discuss ways in which a staff member influences a patient in crisis 5. Practice CPI’s personal safety techniques 6. Discuss and practice how to safely use a team approach to physically intervene with a physically out of control and dangerous individual 7. Discuss postvention as a key element of crisis intervention and prevention
