Class Information for Tracheostomy Competency Course
Description
This course is designed to provide didactic and clinical simulation education regarding care of the research participant with a tracheostomy in addition to hands on competency validation.

Special Comments
This course will be taught by Susannah Wargo, CRNP and Angeline Thomas, RN from the Trach Consult Service as well as CCND Service Nurse Educators. There will be a didactic session followed by hands-on skills validation and participants will have the Tracheostomy Care competency validated in class.
Target Audience
Clinical Research Nurses working in the Clinical Center on non-ICU units that hold the Tracheostomy Competency as part of their Program of Care requirements. Nurses working in inpatient and ambulatory care settings are welcome.
Course Objectives
Participants will:
1) Discuss indications for trachs and principles of managing the research participant, site, and tube.
2) Explain nursing assessment and patient education for research participants with trachs.
3) Describe nursing interventions to prevent complications and respond to potential emergencies.
4) Demonstrate care and troubleshooting of trachs during simulation exercise.
Pre-requisites
Prior to attending the course, participants will review the Clinical Center Nursing Department Standard of Practice: Care of the Patient with a Tracheotomy or Tracheostomy AND the Trach Education Site, including the Trach Minutes and Five Minute Inservices.
