Class Information for CC Chemotherapy/Biotherapy for Non-Oncology Nurses
Description
Two day course providing the fundamentals of administration and nursing management of the non-oncology patient receiving cytotoxic and biologic agents. This course is specifically designed for nurses in the MSS and NBHP Services who administer chemotherapy and/or biotherapy to patients for conditions other than oncology (For example: Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, CGD, Diabetes, MS, PML, Sickle Cell).
Special Comments
Pre-course requirement: -Complete online presentation (non-oncology conditions treated with chemotherapy and/or biotherapy -successfully pass online post presentation quiz -select one condition and the appropriate chemo/bio treatment, prepare a case study/presentation for peers. Course requirements: -attend both days -present case study to peers -successfully pass post course test Successfully passing course (including pre-course work)will meet the behavioral indicator (BI) for Chemotherapy Biotherapy competency validation.
Target Audience
Nurses in MSS and NBHP services administering chemotherapeutic/biologic agents to patients with a non-oncology diagnosis or patients specific to MSS and NBHP program of care.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe nonmalignant indications for chemotherapy and biotherapy agents 2. Identify steps in the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy agents: pretreatment, during treatment, and post-treatment 3. Discuss the assessment and management of side effects of therapy 4. Describe safe handling of hazardous drugs 5. State pertinent patient education related to chemotherapy and biotherapy
Pre-requisites
Completion of the following Nursing Department competencies: 1. Peripheral Venous Access Device 2. Safe handling of Hazardous Drugs 3. Medication administration
