Class Information for Ommaya Reservoir Course
Description
A workshop that reviews pathophysiological basis, clinical manifestations associated with complications, and nursing management of patients with Ommaya reservoirs used for treatment of CNS diseases. The purpose of this program is to prepare the professional nurse to administer intraventricular medications through the Ommaya reservoir and to intervene appropriately when an adverse event occurs during drug administration

Should have chemotherapy/biotherapy and hazardous medications experience or competency Each participant will be responsible for arranging an observation and supervised practicum with an approved preceptor/evaluator according to the availability of appropriate patients Simulation experiences may also be available for practice.

Course Objectives
1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the brain. 2. Demonstrate a neurologic assessment appropriate for the patient receiving intraventricular drug administration. 3. Describe the effects of leptomeningeal metastases, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy on the brain. 4. State the pre-operative and post-operative nursing interventions for a patient with an Ommaya reservoir. 5. State the nursing interventions to be taken when an Ommaya reservoir malfunctions (displaced tip, inability to obtain CSF, indentation of dome, bulging dome). 6. Describe patient educational needs in regards to Ommaya reservoir placement and/or accessing. 7. Describe current treatment regimens for the treatment of meningeal disease. 8. Demonstrate intraventricular administration of medication through the Ommaya reservoir according to established procedure (supervised practicum).
Pre-requisites
1. Chemotherapy biotherapy competency 2. Completion of all orientation requirements. 3. Nurse Manager recommendation
